How long have you been a natural (or in transition)? Why did you decide to begin your journey?
I've been natural since July 2011. My hair was extremely damaged from relaxing and highlighting it. I got tired of relaxing my hair and not seeing any growth. My ends would break all the time, causing me to get hair cuts every time it grew out. I was just tired of dealing with relaxers!

Did you BC (Big Chop)? If so, when?
I transitioned for seven months. I stopped perming my hair in December 2012 and wore box braids up until July 2011 when I BC'd.

What are your favorite styles/protective styles?
I love wearing twist outs! I also love rocking my hair in a puff..I think those are always super cute. For protective styling, I'll sometimes ear my hair in two big flat twists and call it a day. Sometimes, I'll go to my hair braider and get some box braids or Senegalese twists installed if I feel my hair needs a break.

How do you care for your hair? Share your regimen.
For washing, I wash my hair weekly using Shea Moisture's Raw Shea Butter line. I also use the Suave Professionals Almond and Shea Butter Shampoo and Conditioner from time to time. As far as leave in conditioners go, I currently rotate between three different ones (whichever one I feel like using): I'll either use Shea Moisture's Restorative Conditioner, Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner with Aloe Vera and Avocado, or the Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream.

All three products work great on my hair as leave ins! As far as styling, I use Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I tend to use this more in the fall and winter months since it's extremely moisturizing. I also use the Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream. This product works great on my hair as well and gives me the definition I'm looking for. A little definitely goes a long way with both products for me, especially since too much product tends to way my hair down. These products last me months! In the summer, I tend to reach for the Jane Carter Curl Defining Cream.

This product has been pretty okay, but I'm looking for something with a little more hold for the summer months. As far as DC's, I've used all of Shea Moisture's Deep Conditioners from all of their lines and they work pretty well on my hair. However, I'm trying to get into making my own DC with things I have in my kitchen, or use cheapie conditioners(like Suave or Herbal Essences) and mix them with oils. It's much more affordable for me this way, and it's been working pretty well. Some weeks, I'll prepoo by doing a hot oil treatment using olive oil, JBCO, peppermint oil, and coconut oil if I feel my hair needs that extra moisture.

What are your go-to staple products?
My staple go to products are the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter line. If my hair is ever super dry, I know these two products will take care of it. Another staple is olive oil. I love olive oil for my hair! It gives my hair great shine and keeps it moisturized.

What advice would you give others who plan on going natural? Anything you wish you would have known before your transition?
Don't be afraid to just do it! Don't worry about what others are going to think of you. Just know that you are beautiful! If i could go back and tell myself that in 2011 when I BC'd I would. When I BC'd, I didn't feel beautiful because my hair was super short. Embrace your natural hair and natural beauty. Be bold, Be Beautiful, Be Confident!
